Accessible Playgroups

Playgroup Queensland’s Accessible Playgroup Initiative provides support and assistance to a variety of disadvantaged and marginalised community groups across Queensland, with a particular emphasis on working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families and communities.

The Accessible Playgroup Initiative is a strength based model which empowers families, children and stakeholders to contribute positively and confidently in their local community. This model builds on the capacity of a community to provide a sustainable learning environment for children, which will in turn encourage school-ready students.

What will happen at an Accessible Playgroup?

A Facilitator supports the Playgroup for a period of up to 12 months to build on the strengths of the families and to assist them to run their own ‘Community’ lead Playgroup at the end of the funding period.

Assistance includes training for workers, support for families, resources and activities and mentoring for workers. The State Accessible Playgroup Coordinator is based in Brisbane, and regularly travels throughout Queensland to provide assistance to communities in the implementation of their group where possible. Information and assistance is also provided through phone calls and other means of communication.

How will an Accessible Playgroup benefit our Community?

The Accessible Playgroup Initiative works with local services to provide a culturally appropriate and respectful learning environment for families from all backgrounds. These Playgroups have also been successful in identifying and addressing various needs of families in a non-threatening manner which has led to early intervention of larger issues.

An Accessible Playgroup gives back to communities and provides a sustainable safe space for families to return to for years to come.

How can my Organisation become involved?

Due to the limited spaces available for this Program, sites are selected on a highest needs basis. Please contact the State Coordinator of Accessible Playgroups for an Expression of Interest form which will give your Organisation the opportunity to state the level of support that they can offer to partner with Accessible Playgroups. An assessment will be made on delivery of the Expression of Interest form by the State Coordinator and funding body.

Due to this high demand and limited spaces for a Queensland Government funded Accessible Playgroup, Playgroup Queensland now also offers a Brokered Accessible Playgroup Model. All parts of the Program are the same however the Partnering Agency funds the Playgroup which in turn covers all of the above resources and training.
